Everyone has had to go through the inconvenience of getting a flat tire at one point in their lives. It is not fun to say the least. The first thing that comes to mind is how you’re going to fix it.
If possible, it’s best to put the spare tire on and take it to a tire repair facility.
They do not properly seal a puncture and can be dangerous to drive on. Sometimes rope plugs can make the hole larger therefore making the tire unrepairable. They also don’t seal the hole properly so it can cause the tread to separate while driving. If you do use one, head right to a repair shop to have it repaired permanently.
Another type of product that should never be used as a permanent fix is aerosol sealant that comes in a can. If used incorrectly, this stuff can damage your tires instead of fixing them. It can eat away the rim and/or rubber and also ruin your TPMS sensors. It is designed to only be used for a short period of time just to get you to a repair shop.
To properly repair a tire, it’s important to take it to a reputable shop so that a tire technician can dismount the tire from the wheel. This way, the inside can be inspected to ensure its safe to repair. Tires can have run flat damage that can’t be seen from the outside which makes them unable to be repaired.
According to the U.S. Tire Manufactures Association, the only permanent way to repair a tire is an internal patch plug. A patch plug does what the temporary options do not; seals the inner liner and fills the hole where the object was.
